What camera and what focal length lens are you hoping to use this with ?
If its just wide angle (say for landscapes) or more for portrait then most tripods will probably be OK - but the more rigid the better.
If its a longer focal length (say for birding) then vibration and rigidity start to become more important and you do need to step up to the next level or get a wooden tripod and take other steps to reduce vibration (add mass to tripod, remove straps, use shutter release, have shutter delay etc)
