Hi Andrew
I took a couple of avi's of Jupiter with my 4" refractor the same night that I took the 11" SCT images posted recently (15 May). Here's one processed fairly hastily. Visually Jupiter is much cleaner and sharper in the refractor (the moons are always perfect little circles as opposed to squashy splodges in the SCT). However for getting detail in webcam imaging I think the image scale is too small with a 4" and the light gathered is also much less, forcing you to increase the gain and causing more noise. It's a case of a bigger but less good telescope winning by sheer brute force. I read an article in Sky & Telescope that suggested an increase in aperture to 14" SCT will bring in more and more quality images using webcam & Registax, even if optics are less than perfect.
