Hmm that doesn't sound good but without actually looking at the scope I couldn't tell you what's wrong. If I had to guess I'd say the gear teeth aren't aligned or are skipping.

My advice..........take it to a reputable telescope store and get it looked into. If it's nothing you haven't wasted much time but if they find something you could end up saving yourself a lot of money.
