I'm close to purchasing a 700D/750D so I may very well end up doing what you've suggested with my 550D and go down that path.

Thanks for the suggestions and input guys. More things to think about. Does it ever end?

Not sure it ever stops Steve actually I purchased my 2nd hand 550d recently, for that exact purpose I will be going mono and cooling with it.

Take a look at the classifieds, there appears to be a baader 36mm unmounted narrowband set in there as of today ...
