I'm close to purchasing a 700D/750D so I may very well end up doing what you've suggested with my 550D and go down that path.

actually I purchased my 2nd hand 550d recently, for that exact purpose I will be going mono and cooling with it.
Take a look at the classifieds, there appears to be a baader 36mm unmounted narrowband set in there as of today ...
