Processing takes a lot of practice. I have been doing a lot of it for around 3 years now and am only just now feeling like I know where to start. I treat each image as pretty much as a process of elimination. Identify what in your image you don't want and find a way to get rid of it.
It is sometimes hard to know what 'good' looks like, but watching the masters in the Deep Sky section is the best way I have found to get a visual picture of what you are working towards.
