Mimosa and the Jewel Box

Finally a chance to do my own version of CometCatcher's (Kevin's) superb image of Beta Crucis and NGC 4755. Shame I fluffed it by forgetting to rebalance the scope!

Next to the bright star Mimosa (Beta Crucis, the second-brightest star in the Southern Cross) is the beautiful Jewel Box star cluster (NGC 4755). Mimosa is also accompanied by a stunning red "carbon star", making for one of the most colourful areas of starry sky.

This image is made from 120x 30-second images, taken with a Nikon D5100 at ISO 800 and IDAS light pollution filter, on 150mm F/5 Newtonian reflector.
