tuning bartells stepper system

i have a barbells system i acquired (from richardo i think) some time ago and transplanted it onto my 16" geq it runs slewing is ok but tracking appears fast i have to keep correcting the ra by driving the scope east

my original calculated altfullstepsizearcsec figure was 0.84375 this tracked very fast so i have gradually increased the value and tracking has improved i can keep jupiter in a 30mm eyepiece for about 15 mins I'm now at 1.8 i guess i need to be around 2 or 2.25 but this is along way from my calculation

i am reasonably polar aligned

my question is :- is this the most efficient way of slowing the drive down or is there an other way of slowing things down
