I made a bit of a beast with parts from Jaycar.
I stripped the red diode out of a DOA DVD Burner. Then I put the circuit together, from plans I found on the interweb. I just had to buy a good housing/lens combo on eBay.
For about $15, I was able to create a 120mW laser, that could be seen on the side of a building 150m away, on a sunny day.
For safety, I made the laser as 3 parts (battery compartment, circuitry, diode and housing), and keep them separated when not in use.
As an idea for you, I saw that someone was able to combine red, blue and green laser light, and make a white light output. It was pretty sensational. However, I think the output was over 1 watt, so it would have been quite a dangerous light, too. Aside from obvious eye damage, this would burn skin pretty quickly.
