Tony, it seems that the option of NLM is the top trick. I did a test with this option in Fitswork, that is full free, and the result is very similar.

Both has problem with the edge of stars. There will be always an area of 3 or 4 pixels around without the process. You must pay attention in this issue when adjust the parameters.

Those area unprocessed by NLM will must be processed with mask in another graphic processor.

The NLM is very powerful to reduce noise of the background and diffuse areas of nebulas.
