Reading this thread has bought an old Paul Simon song back to me. Snippet below:

'Everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance
Everybody thinks it’s true
Everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance
Everybody thinks it’s true

What is the point of this story?
What information pertains
The thought that life could be better
Is woven indelibly
Into our hearts
And our brains'

We fool ourselves because the delusion gives us pleasure. When, on the way to work, I contemplate what I would do with that $30m I'll never win from that Lotto I'll never enter, it's probably pretty harmless. The trouble is some people believe their delusions and try to live them.
