great writing! The Helix is perhaps the most famous southern planetary, but visually it's not too in-your-face impressive. I don't think I ever saw it from Scotland either!
But we northerners will still claim Virgo, with M87 at +12deg

though many of the Virgo galaxies are decent from the south, the Coma/Canes Venatici ones are pretty ordinary from southern Australia.
It was nice to see the Plough from near Cairns earlier this year, tropical people get the best of both worlds!
