Usually it's not safe David, but because the sun was so low and I used a very fast shutter speed (4000th/sec) and ISO 100, it was ok.
Mind you I didn't look through the view finder for too long, just enough to frame and focus. Also I didn't have the finderscope attached to the main scope nor looked through the main scope directly.
I don't recommend anyone try this if they're not sure of what they're doing.
