In the history of cricket this has been a quite rare event, thank luck and goodness, even though helmets were only worn regularly from 1978 (Dennis Amiss). We will greatly miss Phil Hughes, who was set to step in for Michael Clarke just now.
I feel especially bad for the bowler too, who was playing cricket as fast bowlers have been meant to do since Fred Spofforth. I do hope he too is receiving support and comfort, since he did nothing wrong whatsoever.
This tragedy will reverberate far I think, with calls to eliminate or limit the rising ball. My guess though is that will not happen, as it is part of the spectacle.
