Just in case you don't know, if you place /home in it's own partition you can do clean installs by blowing away the system partition, but not the home partition, and all you preferences, bookmarks etc etc will be retained. You will need to use the custom partitioner and tell it to mount the home partition at /home but that is simple - heck I can do it! This certainly works for Ubuntu and Mint.
