Hi Alistair,
The one you posted has the same background level & the colour has not altered.
I normally aim for a background sampled level of about 20.
I only know how to use LAB mode in PhotoShop as per one
of the tutorials from Louie here:

I don't know GIMP.

I can post your pic with these mods if you want?
