I've long thought that there is a sort of quarantine implied on us by the terrific vastness of the Cosmos.
I agree also here that there is no special reason why all humanity would try to ensure the survival of an elite few (and not themselves) on a voyage to Gliese 581 or somewhere. We would all be too busy eating Big Macs. Seriously would you vote for that?
The immense effort, technology, and expense implied in interstellar travel could as well be applied to a self sustaining colony on Mars, or Europa. I really believe that is doable, desirable, and probable. I'll stay here though, sorry.
