+1 for keeping both eyes open. I used to squint, cover my eyes, do all sorts of things but if you can learn to just keep them both open, it's the best!
Plus using an eye patch means you cant really judge distances. In the dark if you had it on and went to grab something, you could end up tripping or doing something else silly
