Went back and restacked all the subs after grading them in Nebulosity and discarding the bad ones.
Then, in PS CS6, applied either 2 or 3 iterations of Minimum filter to the stars.
I am grateful to the people who have offered advice and encouragement. It is really greatly appreciated.
