The only answer I have for you Barry is, because it works. As stated in my post above, I have tried this object several times before and always struggled to bring out the detail and colour without blowing out the core. Having multiple exposures wasn't really harder to be honest, it just took longer because each exposure group was calibrated and stacked seperately then HDR combined. I actually thought it turned out ok, it is definately my best rendition of this object.
