Ankle injuries -most common are lateral ligament complex injuries so if you have an egg on the outside of the foot then that's what you have got-usually anterior talofibular ligament first that goes.
Once these are torn or stretched then the ankle becomes unstable so it re-injures more easily, especially on uneven ground. So be careful for quite a while afterwards.
The joint sense is damaged as well so your body is not as aware of the position of the ankle, causing more issues.
My advice - keep off it, strap it, use crutches and allow slow recovery. Physio helps if you can get access and if it is not improving get an Ultrasound to help diagnosis.
Oh and luminescent tape on the stairs?
Hope you get better soon

What he said....
I should have talked to Dr Graham 30 years ago...
2 broken ankles, 10 plus other broken bones, trashed knee, screwed shoulder and elbow later... I'm thinking "Bullet"!
Now, for Docs. assessment
