I've got bad back issues too, but can't answer your question as I don't know how much an EQ3 mount weighs.

My 5" Skywatcher MAK on the Bintel Alt-AZ mount (same as AZ4 mount) is very light, and has become my grab and go scope - I carry it outside assembled. Though it needs a 2" diagonal to get the wider views you'd be used to in your dob.

Once you go for an equatorial mount, if it's any good, has to have some weight on it, especially as it has to have a counterweight.

My 6" Mak is heavier, so I haven't put my Bintel mount yet, though one chap posted here the other day that he thought a 6" Mak was about the limit for an AZ4 mount.

That said, wouldn't a 6" dob that you carry out in two pieces be the cheapest thing for your back and wallet?
