The expected clearing of cloud and easing of wind didn't eventuate sadly. Well, it did clear after we left, but not the wind to improve any possible seeing stability.
BUT! the great discovery of the night was the Hanging Swamp as a sheltered observing site. Even though conditions were pretty much bloody terrible, the shelter the surrounding trees gave was enough to take not just the sting out of the wind, but was actually pleasant enough to merit a bonfire to chew the fat around. This area has a designated fire pit which we had permission to use. It made for several very pleasing hours around a merry little blaze.
The kicker for me was those moments when the sky did clear, the Milky Way wad on fire it was so transparent!
So, folks, what do you think. Worth revisiting this spot at the Airfield?
