There are two layers of glass, the outer chamber glass (cheap) the lower one being integral to the CCD (expensive).

Most manufacturers would not entertain the thought of trying to remove the CCD slip as there is a reasonable risk of destroying the sensor, plus the sensor becomes very vulnerable after removal, so warranty's would be void.

That said, if undamaged & left alone inside it's (outer layer protected) hermetic chamber it will perform somewhat better than the glass protected CCD with slightly higher QE and no stray reflections.

As for the expense......

Yes, 35mm sized CCD's are very expensive...I have seen a Kodak (now Truesense) OEM invoice...at $3k you are getting one close to cost.
