You may have looked at the three stars in the 'belt of Orion' (base of 'saucepan'). Look at the 'sword of Orion' (handle of saucepan). The middle 'star' of the handle is the Orion Nebula. You need a lot more power though to split the Trapezium inside the nebula.
The misty patch of the nebula is easy in binoculars and is also visible unaided.
