Thanks Steve. The old scope generates a pretty big and irregular diffraction pattern around bright stars - makes it a bit difficult to match up colour and lum images sometimes.

If you haven't already seen it, there is a very heavily enhanced image by R Jay GaBany that shows streamers above the plane - they seem to be a real feature. http://server3.wikisky.org/imageView?image_id=904194

Robert pointed out that there is in fact a lot of "stuff" outside of the plane of NGC253. http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=112707
