Yes you do!
You always need solar viewing glasses to look at the sun even during an eclipse. The only exception to this is for the brief period during a total eclipse when the moon is completely in front of the sun.

I agree Sydney has missed out on many recent astro events but I had quite good views of the transit of Venus from Sydney, sure there was patchy cloud but also plenty of clear gaps.
