No big secret here, in photo shop I make a duplicate of the image, select Hue and saturation I select cyan and change the hue until it moves to the red. This seems to correspond pretty well to the HA regions, for the LMC.
I then layer in the modified sections into the original, usually have to do it a few times till it looks right.
So it's just channel swapping and layering of an unmodified DSLR image that looks the same as any other.
