Hi Paul, The vague horizontal lines are, as far as I know, noise.
You can reduce, or even remove them, but in objects with a
wide dynamic range such as M42 you lose some or most of the
lovely wispy detail. As I said in my previous post, I compromised.
With objects such as star clusters you can often remove them
completely, unless like M45 the stars have nebulosity associated
with them. I'm a digital newbie, so I wouldn't take my explanation as gospel.
