Not exactly what was causing the problem, there are reports of similar problems out there in the real world. For the time being I've put a static assignment in my dhcp tables for the S3 as I suspect an Ip address conflict was the most likely scenario.

I had this exact same problem when I introduced a new iPhone 5s into the house. As soon as it was on the WiFi, our TPG ADSL service got real spotty. Speed was fine, but some common sites just wouldn't resolve ... like it was a DNS issue. Flip the phone into Airplane mode and reboot the modem, and all was good. Seemed to resolve itself after a few days.
