I don't have a barlow. I'm not sure what the mid-latitude bright spot is - it seems to be a real feature though, if somewhat exaggerated due to my low resolution and aggressive processing.
Edit: It seems it's probably the Hellas plane - it helps if you read the map the right way - the image is South Pole up!
