And just to confuse the issue further, some of the longer focal length scopes on the market, notably the Cassegrains (Schmidt and Maksutovs of this family are quite popular) typically have long focal lengths yet provide relatively compact packaging for their aperture...at least the smaller ones
this is due to the folded light path of their nature and the curvature of their mirrors.
