You could try using orthogonal axes instead of three ways - it's both quicker and more accurate.
Put the bubble level across the tripod parallel to two legs and at right angles to the third leg. Level using the two legs adjustments and leave the third leg alone.
Then turn the level 90 degrees so it points to/passes over the third leg and bisects the first two legs (that you've now finished adjusting). Level using only the third leg adjustment.
It takes only about a minute that way and is better than trying to iteratively adjust three legs (which are not independent axes) where adjusting one usually introduces error into the others.

I can't get my old bones down to the polar scope, so I suppose I'll have to look into EQMOD etc, although I have no idea how to go about it. I'll google it. The mount is on flagstones and is rock solid.

I know what you mean about getting to the polar scope, but I worked out a sure-fire way to get it done in under 5 minutes, and I'm still flexible enough to get down there for that short time. I can provide more if you need it, but it sounds like you really can't use the polar scope at all.
There are plenty of threads on ASCOM/EQMOD/EQDIRECT and Alignmaster, both here on IIS and on other forums like Cloudy Nights. There are a few websites with How To's as well. You shouldn't have any problem finding info.
