It's when you use levels and slide the left hand slider too far into the histogram. This will cause clipping of the blacks. You will get a blacker image, but will cut out detail and clip edges. Anyway I am no expert either, but the link will give you an idea as it relatives to image processing in general.

Ahhh now Im with you yes the black slider, I deliberately went a bit darker to drown out the background noise caused by the haze last night. Thanks for the link!
