Hi Zachary and welcome to IIS.
The best way to learn your way around the night sky is to go and look. There is a very good book called "A Walk Through the Southern Sky" (see http://www.bintel.com.au/Accessories...oductview.aspx ) which is a naked eye tour of the sky. Allow you to learn the signpost stars and the constellations.
Once that is under control you have a great start to successful navigation.
What scope do you have BTW?
