The Mt Erebus crash did a lot to kill off the type, even though that was human error.
They have one of the lowest stalling speeds in big jet aircraft, which meant they were used from 2006 on as fire retardant bombers. There was for a time a proposal that we should have one here, but it was determined that suitable airstrips were not well distributed enough in risk zones.
