You can get a bit more out of using a DSLR if you isolate just the Red channel and only work with that, you can discard the G and B channels. I forget all the details off hand but once you have the red channel then switch it to grey scale and it you get more detail from it.

I had a look and there was nothing useful in the Blue channel but the Green channel had some nice highlights which I've pushed to give some more definition to the flares and some of the surface details. It's very subtle but I'm a bit happier with it now
