I clone drives most of the time, though there's an alternative for less critical systems, which is to image to a file - it's like cloning but the result is a compressed file of the entire drive (or partition) rather than a bit-wise copy. I do it in Linux. I image after a fresh build, or at major upgrade points, so I have known good states to return to.
