I have to say that tonight even here in the middle of Caloundra suburbia the sky seems surprisingly clear ..... the Milky Way is defined and some smaller star clusters are easily visible through my rough binocs. All this from my front yard which is surrounded by bright orange merc vapour streetlights and is less than 2km's from the surf.
