I just went to check this again Rob. Your suggestion about 3 batteries as opposed to my thoughts about it taking 4 has got me thinking.

I've definitely taken 3 out, and I can definitely still see LR44 on the exposed surface at the bottom of the tube.

However, I've put 3 more batteries on top of the mystery surface below, and hey presto - it works!

The only thing is that the batteries in the tube now come right up to the rim of the said tube and don't expose enough thread for that brass coloured retaining cap to bite. All I could do is use the spring to hold it in place, and screw to cap on. But whatever - it works and I'm grateful for that.
