Thanks everyone for your kind words - I guess it's that kind of support that sends out into the cold and wind to try again!

It's a D800, and although I used a torch for the first test of the evening, I didn't need it for any of the subsequent images including this one. I could not figure out the source of the foreground illumination, other hypothesizing that it was Venus reflecting off my white car parked right behind the camera. There's only moderate light pollution from the nearby town of Cervantes and Perth is 200km to the south.
