Thanks Baz, Liz, Carlos and Steve, I think he was that pleased to be free of his imprisonment he decided to just chill for a while.
My guess he was trapped for several hours judging by the size of hole my dog had dug under the fence.
The last one I rescued was inside vertical formwork shutters and was only seen when the concreatures started pumping wet crete into the wall. All the big burly blokes were too frightened to stick their hand down the shutter. I donned a welder's glove and grabbed it by the scruff of the neck and cleaned the cement off him before flinging him into a nearby tree.
No thanks from him though, his claws went clean through the welder's gloves. (Ouchie). This guy was probably too tired to fight:
