I've just re-read you post Jen and realised that it's VirtualDub that is spitting the dummy and giving you grief. It sounds like VirtualDub isn't able to decode the file because you don't have the H264 codec installed on your system.

There are various ways to get it on your system, and once it's installed it'll stay there and make VirtualDub play nice.

If your computer has a BluRay drive, install the BluRay playback software that came with it (BluRay movies are usually encoded using the H264 codec).

Alternatively download and install a codec pack (use Google to find one). From memory K-Lite Codec Pack used to work well.

Finally, do a Google search for an answer to your problem - there's heaps of posts over at Doom9 and places like that. A little more perseverance and you'll crack it Jen!
