Auspost lost my renewed passport last week. The Australian Passport office sent it registered mail. The mailman tried to deliver it while I was at work, left a card but then the passport vanished and they couldn't find it at the post office. Registered or signature on delivery only protects you against the recipient falsely claiming they didn't receive it. Doesn't make the delivery any more reliable or the parcel any more trackable if they lose it.

Judging by the quantity of other people's mail I get in my mailbox, I told the passport office investigator that the mailman probably put it in someone else's mailbox by mistake. I've had about one piece of incorrectly addressed mail put in my mailbox every week over many years.

Many years ago, so much of my mail was going missing, I took a GPO box to "solve" the problem. $160 per year. It's better but by no means perfect. Early September one year a few years back my cousin sent me a wedding invitation to her October wedding. It was in an oversized envelope and wouldn't fit in the PO box. She eventually called to find out why I hadn't RSVP'd. The following February, three red collect cards appeared in my box on the same day all back dated 6 months to appropriately spaced dates the previous September. To add insult to injury, when I went in to collect, the clerk had the audacity to say,"you don't collect your mail very often do you."

Since April, regular Parcel Post now offers limited tracking, namely
"acceptance, in transit and delivered".
I ordered an adaptor from a supplier a few weeks ago. Tracking showed it as delivered 3 days before I received it.
