Thanks for all the suggestions. I will try 'Save as AVI' in VirtualDub.
It also seems like nobody else has problems loading in large numbers of frames. If I select 500 or more BMP images and try to open them, nothing gets loaded and Registax just sits there. Oh well, I will investigate further when I get time.
