Penumbral Eclipse. 28.11.12.

Hi. I found out the Penumbral Eclipse was happening last night and decided to try and image it especially going for an image at the start and an image at the maximum.
At the start i was aiming for an image every 5 mins but high level cloud put a stop to that. So was happy just to get some images and the sky was clear at start and finish imaging times.
I put together a side by side comparison to show the level of darkness created by the eclipse. To the naked eye it was minimal, it shows up more in the images. Although having an image to look at whilst comparing them on the camera screen made it easier to tell buy naked eye.

Both images have had the exact same processing. i e what was done to one, the exact same setting was applied to the other. Mainly just sharpening, contrast, brightness etc.
There is a discolouration on the images. i think caused by C.A, processing or both.
Both images are single images. 500D-C102HD Achro refractor-ISO 100-EXP 1/160-EQ3.
This is just a comparison really, i will have another go at trying to remove the discolouration.

I love the image at maximum, it just looks so surreal, familiar yet a bit different, and really three dimensional looking :thumbsup:

Great! I caught it too with a micro four thirds camera and telephoto lens. Nothing too exciting though.As it is happens I got my first reasonable shot of Jupiter through my telescope just before, albeit through clouds. Also a wide shot of the penumbra with Jupiter and a few moons just visible.

Thanks Hugh, Mike and Matt. Yeah Hugh I agree, it certainly looks different in the image. Thinking back now in hindsight, I should have taken more images and stacked them at the maximum stage. Next time.

Cool Matt. Did you post your images? I love seeing images of the moon and other planets close by. I did not attempt any this time. By the time it was at maximum I had to be up in a few hours to tend to the kiddies lol

Here is a repro of the comparison.
I think it is better. Still kept exact setting used to process both images.

I was hoping to image this too - but clouds all night - it would have completed a good 12 months of eclipses for me - a solar partial, the Venus transit, a partial lunar and total lunar - missed the penumbral!

Thanks Stu. Glad you like it. It was a warm balmy night and although the chip in the camera did not like it re noise lol, i didn't mind sitting out there looking at how many stars i couldn't see because of the bright moon :lol:

That would have capped off an epic list of events:thumbsup: On the scale of things, this was a good one to miss:)
I missed the total solar (just imaged the partial) so i missed the best one on the list.
i visually saw the total lunar, partial lunar. I imaged the trasit of Venus, partial solar and Penumbral so i am happy to get something from those events. Would love to travel for the next total:D
