Hi all! :hi:

I was after advice to help me with purchasing a Telescope for around 400-500 (600 maximum). I have been reading countless threads from all over the internet in an attempt to help me decide, and it seems the general consensus for my price range is an 8" Dobsonian.

I will be going back to university next year and this will be the last chance I have to purchase a decent telescope for at least 4 years, and I would like something I don't regret buying once I have a little more experience.

I would appreciate any help or advice

:thanx:

Most people in this hobby take a lot of care with their equipment, so you can often get good quality equipment second hand. I would recommend inspecting the equipment before purchase and if possible using the scope at night before purchase. (both of these are things very hard if you purchase new - but then you often get warranty if you purchase new). Second hand might also leave you some $ for some extra eyepieces.

I certainly recommend the Dob - 8" it offers good viewing and is easy to move around.

You should try to attend any astronomy clubs viewing nights - they usually have a range of scopes you can use - to confirm your choice. But at your price range - a Dobsonian mount is probably best choice.

good luck.

:) A test run is an awesome idea. You can also get care and feeding instructions from the previous owner. (ie how to collimate the optics )

Understatement of the year... I take extreme care with my equipment. I suspect everyone else does as well.

Normal wear and tear for astronomical equipment generally means dust, maybe some dew spots for those who observe from tropical locations and the occasional scratch on an irrelevant surface. Second hand is a great way to save money.

BTW: the recommendation on the Dob is the best one for a Uni Student. You will be observing ad-hoc and you will want something that's very transportable and fast to setup / tear down...

Hi Kev

I would like to echo the comments so far. The 8" Dob will provide you with the best compromise of affordability, aperture and portability. The scope that is easy to use, set up & pack away, and has an aperture that will open up the night sky to you will serve you well. There are good secondhand ones available and this can save many dollars that can be put to good use elsewhere (eyepieces, laser collimator, star charts, etc).

Go along to an astro group meeting or observing night.

All the best!
John
