Hi all,

On the same day as the eclipse the Earth was being hit by a CME from the sun that sparked incredibly strong aurora displays around the world. The numbers at times were the strongest I have ever seen. Unfortunately this was all happening during the day for us here in Australia. Looking at the cloud forecast the best place to be if it continued into the night seemed to be exactly where I live as all of Vic and Tas were completely clouded over. So I waited. As soon as it got dark enough I did a test shot from my yard to see if there was any activity still there. Short answer: YES!
126848

So I jumped in my car and headed five minutes up the road to one of my favorite locations. By the time I got there and walked up the hill to this tree it had faded a lot. I stayed for a few hours hoping it would reignite but it wasn't to be.

Nice one Greg. Good that you got some indirect contact with the Sun on eclipse day

I'm heading south soon. Determined to catch some Aurora this trip even if it means camping on the southern beaches for weeks. May bump into you if you head into Victoria?

Where do you monitor these CMEs?

Greg.

Thank you very much everyone :D Glad you all like it.

There is another CME predicted to hit today (20th). Will certainly let you know if I am down that way and we might be able to meet up.

As Morton said, Spaceweather.com is a good place to start. I have a blog post about the other sites I use to determine if I bother heading out or not here: http://www.capturingthenight.com/blog/?p=38
If you are on FB there is a great group called Aurora Australis Tasmania (https://www.facebook.com/groups/215002295201328/)

I should reach the south east corner of nsw tonight. With any luck the cmes will arrive as well. I'm shooting some interesting geological sites both inland and along the se vic coast for the next week or so. Places i visited as a geo student.

The numbers have been fluctuating all day. Moon is too bright at the moment. Hoping for it to reignite in the early hours once the moon sets. Good luck mate.
