Hi folks
and thanks to Greg for alerting us to this new SN.
I stayed up tonight as the storm we have had over the past couple of days was forecast to clear after midnight. Glad I waited it out to get this data.
Barely visible are actual diffraction spikes from the spider in my RC, which goes to show how bright this is.
My webhoster is down at the moment, so I will post a full sized image tomorrow.
Cheers
Martin
Wow Martin. That image is soooooo clear. SRO has worked out well for you.

Apart from the supernova Martin that's a NGC1365 image to just dream about. Great work as usual.

Finally a super clear image whilst the rest of us mere mortals dabble with shoddy little shots :)
I'll give it a crack tonight if the cloud participates. I was all set up last night with the astrograph when all the fluffy scud rolled over yet again.

This is what I was talking about when I said this was a large and photogenic galaxy!
A beautiful photo, Martin.

Yes Greg, this is the 12.5" RCOS at Yass....in operation at last.
John.....if I understand your post correctly, you think this image was taken from SRO?.

David,
you can check for SN using something like the Thompson SN Charts, the Real Sky CD's which cover the whole sky using the Palomar and Siding Spring schmidt scopes, other amateur images or any of the on-line imaging services.
Compare your image with the "reference"
(I'm sure the guys from BOSS can update this info!)

Thanks very much everyone.
David - i believe there are a number of amaterur and professional organisations that continually search out new supernovae. I guess once one has been found, it is sent to the professionals to verify its occurence from existing data, and indeed, make a determination that it is where it appears to be.....then of course, is the matter of it getting brighter.
I have an earlier image of NGC 1365, and it certainly is not in there.
cheers

Cracking image Martin. I take it you are using an AOL on this system? Something I need to get hold of myself, but the price has made me balk a little.
Heaps of really nice detail, maybe just a little magenta cast, but it could be Ha data showing through.

Hello again
I have uploaded the higher res version of this image as the image I posted a couple of days ago was just the thumbnail.

Paul - if I recall the AOL was guiding at about 4.1hz.

Martin, I feel unqualified to comment on your work other than to say FANTASTIC! Someday I'd like to get there knowing it's many years of work frustration and study. Thanks for showing what is possible! It's inspirational.

Martin,
I very happy for the recognition given...well done.
I would like to see the equivalent of the APOD for spectactular, world class spectra collected by the amateur.....unfortunately they don't seem to have the same appreciation by the community as some of the astro images....such is life.
