I get my news from the radio mainly, occasionally watch the TV news. My main TV viewing is docos and a very select group of dramas, mainly The Good Wife and Covert Affairs (mainly 'cos of Piper Perabo!).

So unless Gangnam or whatever his name is makes an appearance on one of those shows, I guess I'm going to have to call it a "pleasure denied".

I'm guessing its just the absurdity and opportunity to act silly thats the main catch, it's a poke at the rich so was meant to be silly and happened to have a catchy beat.
People get drawn in when they see celebs doing the dance and singing along and the wow factor increases, mania spreads.
Makes a lot of sense actually, but hard to explain
