Post Eclipse Party

Jen and I would like to invite everyone attending the Eclipse in Cairns to join us for a Post Eclipse Party at the "Apres Beach Bar and Grill" at Palm Cove, starting at 1pm and finishing.....whenever. :P

As it is situated right on the beach, we thought it an excellent venue, especially for those who have family with them. I can see us wandering from the bar to the beach and back throughout the afternoon.

We hope to see as many of you as possible, to celebrate (or commiserate, depending on the weather.) this amazing experience. :)

Could you please RSVP on this thread so we can get an idea of numbers so we can try to reserve tables.

There are buses all the way up the coast servicing all the motels, resorts and back packers.
I'll try to find a time table.

Thanks for the invitation.

I had been searching some time back for a suitable venue and had happened across
Apres but my concern was that it might be too small to fit us all! I think what we might
have to do is simply spill out onto the beach and the nature strip as well.

For example, I am in a party of 5 and I know people such as Mike will be with family
as well as will be many others, so the numbers could quickly add up.

But as you would know from having looked yourself, potentially larger budget
venues such as RSL's are pretty thin on the ground there.

Nobody has a firm grip on the total number of visitors to the area on the day
but suffice to say that narrow esplanade along the beach might be a total traffic
meltdown, so it would probably be best to park some distance away from the
esplanade and go there by foot.

So the go might be "see everyone at Apres and across the road at the beach" if
Apres gets too full.

Yep, I can do the round trip from Mt Carbine in the rental car. My wife and me. Can take two passengers, three if you don't mind squeezing in the back seat of an intermediate size car. :sunny::driving:

Yes Allan, some sort of lunch or afternoon snack. All being well with the traffic (!!) we have about 1 hr 35 min of travelling. Turns out I have a bigger car so can take three passengers down and back, if necessary.

I ended up crashing the party for a couple of hours :P

So many IIS people there, and I only met a fraction of the people there. I got to see how many people were there when someone shouted "group photo" and we all migrated outside!

Some stories of near misses, some of misses, while others had perfect conditions, it reinforced how fortunate I was to have the clouds part just before totality!

My final mission before I fly out tomorrow is to buy myself one of those eclipse T-shirts! :lol:

Police raid eclipse party FNQ. I was a little concerned. Although quietl confident that it was not the Astro party.
Later the details came to light.

Party was at Palmer River. Hippies arrested, in possession of illicit items.

I was devastated when we made the decision to head home I caught up with Jen and after I got back in the car I just couldn't sit down and I wouldn't have lasted a minite. Hopefully after an operation I can make it to astrofest or an IIS astro party. But to look on the bright side I did see the totality which if I am honest I shouldn't have gone up for it but I just couldn't resist it.

Just got back from Cairns last night and had limited internet whilst away.

I came along with Brad (Zardos123) and it was great to meet so many IISers at the post-eclipse party. Thanks to all those who comiserated with me over missing totality due to cloud (a few kms up the coast at Palm Cove woiuld have made all the difference - oh well). It was gratifying to hear that so many saw it and enjoyed such a great experience. :thumbsup:

It was great to get to say "hi" to some of you who were still at Apres late
on Wedesday afternoon. With some shy family members in tow idling outside it,
for Mai and I it was the briefest of stays.

Though we were staying at a beach house on the Palm Cove head land, only
a short 15 min walk away from Apres, we had driven the day before and
observed the entire eclipse in cloud free conditions north west of Mt Carbine on
the Mulligan Hwy, south of the centerline.

We had been hoping that those on the coast and tablelands would have
also seen it, so it was sad to hear when talking to H and others that some had
missed out. However, those we talked to who had missed out were very
philosophical about it and were just happy to be there to enjoy life!

We returned to Sydney yesterday afternoon after a fabulous week.

Thank you EVERYONE for coming to the party. I'm soooo sorry I couldn't spend time with all of you. It was just one thing after another.
I'm still blown away that our very special international guest Camilla, and her entourage from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory joined us.
